TREES on a Bolton street have grown so big they are blocking the sunlight from houses — and residents say they are making their lives a misery.

The 20ft trees in Adelaide Street, Daubhill, have also clogged up drains, causing water spillage inside one home.

Roy Meanley, aged 59, has lived on the street for 15 years.

He said: “As residents of this area, we’ve had enough. We’re sick of it, really — this has been going on for 10 years now.

“I always have to have lights on inside my house, otherwise I can’t get any light at all. As a result, I spend about £60 a month on electricity.

“Then, when it gets to autumn and winter, there are leaves everywhere, which we have to clear up every day. It’s a nightmare.”

Mr Meanley is not the only Adelaide Street resident who claims to have had issues with these trees.

Yasin Patel, an architectural technologist, aged 44, says water from the drains has come into his house as a result of the leaves clogging up the gutters.

He said: “The damage done to my house is unbelievable. This has been going on for years.

“At the moment, we cannot decorate the rooms because there’s so much damage.”

Mr Patel added: “I don’t want the trees to be this big, they are causing us all sorts of problems.

“What I want to know is, who is going to pay for the damage?”

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “We have been in consultation with our Corporate Management Property department but it is still unclear at this stage who owns the trees. They will still be sending inspectors out to the area.

“We will also be sending a member of our trees and woodlands team to inspect the trees and take any appropriate action.”
