THE glitz and glamour of the 1920s helped to give a cancer hospital a major fundraising boost.

A Great Gatsby-themed event raised vital funds for The Christie in Manchester.

The charity night was held at the Brookfield Hall in Peel Street, Westhoughton, for the hospital’s planned new oncology unit for young people and raised £2,635.

Organiser Karen Trenbath, a Royal Mail employee, from Tyldesley, was spurred on to raise funds as her father, Alan Davies, is currently battling stomach cancer.

He has previously suffered from prostate cancer.

She also wanted to raise money for young people affected by cancer as she is a parent.

A further £200 from Royal Mail will be added to the total. The charitable evening included a three-course meal, entertainment from Paul Melville and comedian Big Lou, a disco and roulette with a croupier.

Mrs Trenbath said: “The Great Gatsby charity night was a roaring success. A representative from The Christie was there at the beginning of the evening to talk to the guests about the latest appeal.

“The entertainment was fabulous and the roulette table went down a storm. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who bought tickets for the ball and also by the local companies who donated their services for free or gave raffle prize donations.”

Mrs Trenbath is training for the Manchester Marathon and will hold a another event on May 25. People can still donate money here.

Any businesses that would like to donate their services for the May event, which will be a family fun day with a festival theme, should email Karen.trenbath@gmail.com
