League tables are insidious, evil and unnecessary. They pile lots of pressure on young children who don't need it and make teachers focus less on teaching and more on coaching automatons to pass exams. The system is fundamentally flawed and should be scrapped immediately.

Here in Germany no child is formally tested at school until he or she is ten years old, a schedule of monitoring is in place to ensure each and every child is achieving their potential. No league tables to print in local newspapers or individual results printed. Most children can speak 2 or 3 languages as they move to senior school at which point they choose an intellectual, a more practical education or a balance between both.
