Tee-mendous day helps Cory cause

GOLFERS “clubbed together” at an event organised to raise money for a 15-year-old boy who was paralysed in a freak diving accident.

Cory Peyton damaged his spinal cord after diving into a swimming pool and hitting his head while on holiday in Portugal in July.

At the time, doctors told the teenager, from Atherton, that he would never regain movement from the neck down and would never walk again.

But against the odds Cory has experienced movement in his arm, hips, toes and ankle and his family are determined to raise more than £20,000 to send him to a specialist unit in Watford, with the hope that he will eventually walk again.

There have been a range of fundraising events organised, with the latest being a golf day at Dunscar Golf Club, near Blackburn Road. More than £500 was raised. Cory’s dad Gary, aged 43, and his brother Ashley, aged 25, took part in the tournament.

Mr Peyton said: “The whole thing went really well and me and Ashley enjoyed taking part, although with the score Ashley got he could have gone round the course twice.

“I did quite well after a four year absence from the game — but it was really about taking part and raising money for Cory, which we did. Cory is doing really well and just the other night he felt movement in his ankle, which is a big thing for us.”

The event was organised by a friend of the Peyton family, Stuart Surples, who said he was initially worried it would not raise the £500 he had hoped for.

He added: “We had been promised that 30 golfers would turn up but it turned out to be only 16, but thankfully the people that did come gave very generously and we got over that total.

“We would like to thank the club and everyone who donated prizes, it was a great day.”
