THE success of the Hollywood blockbuster Gravity at the Oscars is being celebrated in Bolton.

The movie, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, won the Academy Award for special effects on the film industry’s biggest night.

It also claimed six others including one for Best Director.

University of Bolton special effects graduate Scott Brindley works for Framestore, the company behind some of the stunning special effects in the film.

And Visiting Professor Neill Gorton created the make-up for a scene involving two dead astronauts together with co-director of his studios Millennium FX, Rob Mayor.

Prof Gorton was responsible for the female astronaut — creating chilling prosthetics for the movie in which astronauts are left adrift in space after an accident.

He said: “I'm thrilled to see Gravity get the recognition it deserves. Although our contribution was small, it was clear from our time on set that it was going to be something very special.

“The creative approach to filmmaking and revolutionary techniques developed by the British crew are truly inspiring, and something to be extremely proud of."

Mr Brindley, aged 25, was snapped up by Framestore — who have offices in London, Montreal, New York and Los Angeles — after graduating and is currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy.
