A MULTI-million pound college campus is to shut after just six years with the loss of up to 35 jobs.

Bolton Sixth Form College is to close its Farnworth campus — which opened in 2008 as a result of a campaign which involved the then Bolton South East MP Brian Iddon.

Principal Steve Wetton said the college had to make the “sad decision” because not enough students were applying to go there, choosing instead to go to the town centre campus.

He said it had been made after “extensive consultation with all staff and stakeholders over a two year period”.

Mr Wetton said: “After lengthy consultation we feel that this is the very best option to ensure the future success of Bolton Sixth Form College and further improve outcomes and success rates for all of our learners.

“The desires and needs of our students are always central to college policies and it is with regret that the reduction in Government funding will result in some redundancies.

“The college will provide all the necessary support and guidance to staff whilst we go through this period of change.”

From September, all students will be taught at the Deane Road campus.

Up to 35 teaching staff and support staff jobs could go as the college is forced to restructure — due to the closure of the campus together with government cuts and changes to post-16 education.

These include government changes to A-level qualifications, with young people having one less subject in their first year.

MORE:

Bolton Sixth Form College is to stop teaching BTEC level one and two courses as more students apply to study A-levels and level three courses.

This move is because more young people in Bolton are achieving higher grades in secondary school.

The college said retirement and not replacing staff could bring the number of job losses down, however, education chiefs have not ruled out compulsory redundancies.

The news of the closure and redundancies comes as Ofsted recently gave the college a top report, describing it as good with outstanding features.

Mr Wetton said staff would be “supported through the difficult time” — and he stressed that the college had worked hard to make the Farnworth campus work.

When the Farnworth campus first opened it was oversubscribed attracting 800 students. Now there are about 430.

Mr Wetton said: “Farnworth campus’ most successful year was 2009/10 before the town centre one was built.

“It was great, it was vibrant and had a good social side.”

The principal said that when the Farnworth campus opened there was no guarantee that a town centre campus would be built.

Figures show that so far only 10 out of the hundreds who had chosen Bolton Sixth Form College as their first choice for September had applied to attend the Farnworth campus.

The Farnworth campus will continue to be used for college musicals, dance and drama performances as well as staff training and meetings.

It will also be available to local residents and organisations for community events, while alternative arrangements are explored for it.

Centre was built after campaign backed by MP

 • BOLTON Sixth Form College opened a new purpose-built £14 million campus in Queen Street, Farnworth, in 2008 to provide post-16 education for the south of the borough.
 • It was built as the result of a campaign, which involved the then Bolton South East MP Brian Iddon, and work by the then principal Roy Whittle to provide post-16 education for young people in the south of the borough.
 • The campus in Great Lever shut followed by the one in Smithills, once the town centre campus opened. The college campuses run almost identical courses.
 • The Farnworth campus proved popular with students and was oversubscribed.
 • When Bolton Sixth Form College opened its new larger £30 million campus in Deane Road in September, 2010, numbers began to fall as more students opted to go to the town centre campus.
 • Bolton Sixth Form College has attracted up to1,800 students across the two sites, but with the closure of the Farnworth campus, numbers are expected to remain at about 1,500 — as student numbers fall nationally.
 • Mr Wetton said the numbers of new post-16 centres opening up would be able to cater for students wanting to take level one and two courses.
 • All Farnworth students, many of whom had originally applied to go to the town centre, will be moved to that campus in September.

In my days, you applied for a certain course or subject, not a location. If Course X was running at a certain site, that's where you went, no argument. Farnworth is only a few miles away, a ten minute journey from Bolton town centre at best. How come they have lost around 50% of their students since the campus opened? This needs a bit more investigation I suggest.

Correct, being endorsed by Brian Iddon was probably a curse, remember this was the man who tried to force everyone to carry ID cards. Shame about the campus though, it would have been beneficial to Farnworth had it been a success.

I think it may be because over the years more students are staying at the sixth form of their school or going to bolton or bury college..shame really and a waste of money just to completely to close it they could have specific courses held there to attract more people.

this is indeed a shame - perhaps the suggestion that certain courses be run at certain locations could be looked at (I cannot get the course I want in the local Adult Community College and have to travel out of my neighbourhood if I wish to take it - so what is different with Sixth Form?). The building can and should be utilised for the benefit of the community

I agree with this comment. A couple of schools had extensions built to cope with children needing schools after some were closed. Perhaps instead of closure part of the college could be opened up to people of all ages wishing to learn new skills without exams at the end. Clarence Street was really missed when it was demolished and nothing was made available for similar projects and courses. Worth a consideration Bolton Council.

Farnworth did previously have a sixth form; at the Grammar School, closed as a result of political ideology. Unfortunately when the College moved from its previous home the management of the move and the subsequent management standards of the facility were both very poor.

The children of Farnworth and the surrounding area deserve such a facility, as if correctly run it would drive aspiration. Unfortunately, most children post year 11 from the area travel out of area with more of them going to Bury, Pendleton and Salford Colleges rather than either of the Bolton College campuses.

It is understood that there is around a £4m mortgage still outstanding on the building which may now fall subject of reuse in the same way as the TIC next to the hospital. Or could be taken over, as an unused Bolton Council building as a site for a Free School.

The way out of poverty is education; Farnworth, Kearsley and the surrounding areas have more than their fair share of poverty and now due to poor management and political decisions will have rather less education than before.

Another massive step backwards for the area and the Council; both elected and appointed along with our local MP who should today hold their heads in shame.

This is a strategic level failing of both the governing body and senior management of the college. All individuals holding these posts should resign and apologise to their colleagues and the community who they have so badly let down.

It is clear to see that instead these individuals have decided to make 35 of the hard working teachers and staff at the college redundant.

Millions of pounds of taxpayers money has been used to fund the building of the college building at Farnworth. It was then decided to expand further and extend the top level of the college building in Bolton. Another multi-million pound project funded by the taxpayer.

An educational institution is not measured on the buildings it has but instead on the success of it students and the effectiveness of the people they are educated by. With such significant staffing cuts how can anyone have any faith in the recent OFSTED report Bolton Sixth Form College has received?

By making these redundancies the college seems to have forgotten that its employees are its greatest asset. Parents should be aware of this when they consult their children on where they will go to study.

Lets put it tis way this council, and the previous have aa complete disregard when it comes to education.

the 5 primary schools, I mentioned (under TRO) earlier, that closed were done by the LibDems and carried through by Labour. They also closed 3 secondary schools.

Therefore there was already a shortage of places with these closures, and with the increase in population both naturally and from any possibly migrants workers (such as myself as I only moved back to Bolton from 7 years in the EU last year). So what was done, nothing, they made class sizes even bigger which is definitely not the best way to educate children (so all those who got decent grades in any exam have done far better than what they should have done and they should be applauded). And more recently the Council have been removing schools from their remit by agreeing to create Academies, that employ non-trained people to act as teachers (teaching on the cheap), such as St Catherines (Withins).but notice how no actual new schools are being built therefore the lack of creation of new spaces - basically all they are doing is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

This would be a perfect site to create a fantastic new education facility from the age of 4 and it has enough space for natural growth and expansion and could actually turn it into a 2one-stop-shop" for schooling from the age of 4 through to the age of 18!

It does look as though you need to brush up on your grammar.

People may make spelling mistakes either through careless typing or through dyslexia or any other reasons, but the problem here is that there is no spell checker on this website.

But to have bad grammar and poor sentence construction - that is totally unforgiveable. No capitals, no full stops where required and too many full-stops when not required.

So, now please advise the other readers as to why you have mocked a person who does actually have slight dyslexia, not just on this thread but many other threads and as to why you are stalking me and mocking me on every thread I go on. Or are you to embarrassed to do so.

Its a pity that more people have not taken to the Farnworth College....the facilities are fantastic and it is a lot less crowded than Bolton.

its because i do not care one bit what a mentally challanged moron thinks of me or my grammar

however.............
........

you on the other hand seem to care greatly about the views of everyone on here, hence my corrections.........

this is demonstrated by the 20 hours a day you spend on here, by you continually posting about working at a solicitors ( lets be honest we all know thats a laugh unless you are the cleaner ) and by you posting about your make believe life constantly..........
..... that gives us all a good laugh

on a more serious note

have you taken these threads to your doctor yet ????

to get a mental health viewpoint ???

you seem to think this is your job and that you are needed on here, thats the funny thing, its common in low intelligence OCD individuals

you are clearly mentally unwell and have an obsessive personality that results in you focusing on things like this site way to much

do you have family that you can talk to ??? maybe they can rescue you before you top yourself because someone gave you the thumbs down

so family or doctor..........

lets be honest, if you think you are in the right and there is nothing worng taking these threads to a doctor will be no problem hey ????

but we both know that if you do then they will tell you that you have serious mental health issues and are obsessive

This would be a perfect site to create a fantastic new education facility from the age of 4 and it has enough space for natural growth and expansion and could actually turn it into a 2one-stop-shop" for schooling from the age of 4 through to the age of 18![/p]
1st letter - T 2nd letter - H 3rd letter - I 4th letter - S THIS commenting on education and spelling the 4th word in the ramble is ironic dont worry you will get there soon.......... 1st step - spell the 3 letter words correctly then focus in the 4 letter ones[/p]
Can you please explain to the rest of the readers and commentators as to why YOU have destroyed a good thread and spoiled the flow of the decent comments?[/p]
yes im trying to improve your communication skills since you spend 20 hours a day on here dont worry im sure you will get there eventually lets take the last post you managed to spell YOU correctly and THE huge improvement .........[/p]
Does your keyboard not have an apostrophe? People may make spelling mistakes either through careless typing or through dyslexia or any other reasons, but the problem here is that there is no spell checker on this website.

But to have bad grammar and poor sentence construction - that is totally unforgiveable. No capitals, no full stops where required and too many full-stops when not required.

So, now please advise the other readers as to why you have mocked a person who does actually have slight dyslexia, not just on this thread but many other threads and as to why you are stalking me and mocking me on every thread I go on. Or are you to embarrassed to do so.

You correct my spelling, although there is no spell checker on this website, and yet you show no respect for the English language by not using true grammar. You also mock a persons disability, how big do you feel in doing that?

You say I should take these posts to a doctor to show how unstable I am. The fact is it would show that you have the problem. You stalk/obsessive. You insult. You crave a response. You spoil the pleasure of good debate by trolling Ipso facto you have the major concern, healthwise.

Why do you keep showing yourself up with you lack of English grammar?

Why do you insult?

Why do you crave the responses, which I give you?

If you do not know what dyslexia is then I feel sorry for you, as it shows your lack of knowledge, or should I say ignorance, on the disability.

I know a couple of psychologists who could easily help you out (friends from school days) and they have seen your posts and can ay for certain that it is certainly you that has the problem - in fact you have insulted one them only the other night on another thread.

You have been found out as a troll and you are backed in a corner trying to fight your way out. Fact is, I am calm, cool and collective, unlike the other night, and you don't like it because you haven't got the upper hand. Therefore you are not in control. Thank you for showing the readers on here, just how shallow you actually are and that you do not care about anyone on here but are just here to insult people and not to comment whatsoever on the news items. Your are a troll.
you are thick, un educated, obsessive and live in a fantasy world........ not dyslexic

there is a huge difference

ask the doctor to explain it when you go
Why do you keep showing yourself up with you lack of English grammar?

One can see that with your responses quite easily.
haha

backed into a corner ???

you do know this is a website dont you ...........

and not actually important in life ?????

also ( seriously ) you do know the bolton news isnt the matrix dont you ????

the only strange thing here is how much this website is of your life.....

you need to spend more time with family and real people

you mentioned you were engaged before ( i know this was prob another fantasy but lets play it out )............. does she not ask why you are so obsessive ??? why you are so unlikable ??? why your career hasnt progressed beyond the point of support roles in law firms ??? wyh you are always telling strangers you own businesses around the world and can speak 5 languages ( but you work in a support role in a law firm and get the train every day ) ????

truth hurts but give up the fantasy, accept your life, take some time away from the internet and sort your life out

you clearly aspire to be a solicitor since you mention every day that you work for a law firm, so why not put this obsessive behavior to good use and study law ???? that way you will no longer feel inadequate and feel the need to fantasise on a website trying to impress people that really dont care

ps - calm, cool and collected

not collective

oh dear....... its painful reading

If you really want to try psychology on another poster - your best bet would e to know the subject before even trying it.

Here are a few books for you to read :-
1. The Science of Mind and Behaviour by Richard Goss
2. Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride
3. Psychology in Practice by Philip Banyard
4. Cognitive Psychology by Michael Eyseneck and Mark T. Keane

and that's just for beginners or there is even a fantastic dissertation by a Beverley Astley who is a major psychologist based in Manchester which is available to read online!

haha

its because i do not care one bit what a mentally challanged moron thinks of me or my grammar

however.............

........

you on the other hand seem to care greatly about the views of everyone on here, hence my corrections.........

this is demonstrated by the 20 hours a day you spend on here, by you continually posting about working at a solicitors ( lets be honest we all know thats a laugh unless you are the cleaner ) and by you posting about your make believe life constantly..........

..... that gives us all a good laugh

on a more serious note

have you taken these threads to your doctor yet ????

to get a mental health viewpoint ???

you seem to think this is your job and that you are needed on here, thats the funny thing, its common in low intelligence OCD individuals

you are clearly mentally unwell and have an obsessive personality that results in you focusing on things like this site way to much

do you have family that you can talk to ??? maybe they can rescue you before you top yourself because someone gave you the thumbs down

so family or doctor..........

lets be honest, if you think you are in the right and there is nothing worng taking these threads to a doctor will be no problem hey ????

but we both know that if you do then they will tell you that you have serious mental health issues and are obsessive
You see the problem is that you do care, therefore it is you with the problem.

Again a total lack of respect for English grammar.

Where is your pride?

You ought to be ashamed f yourself that you cannot write in English. And here you are commenting/mocking others for their errors.

As Mark said earlier - glass houses and all that.

Again shame on you!

I must have scared you off with a big word which you don't understand!

More is the pity because I did enjoy mocking you, a others did, and shows how close you are to a complete breakdown because of the attention you constanly crave.

Now most of thsi was on a thread to do with the closure of an educational campus - which is more parropriate than one thinks considering how ingorant you are of the facts and shows that you should have stayed at school instead of bunking off and then you would have a proper job instead of pretending you do.

Anyway time to go as a plane to catch at 1015 to Schiphol. See you later, loser.

TRO/BWFC71, your lack of self-awareness here is staggering. You whine about "... you decided to destroy a thread that people enjoyed commenting on with your personal attack", yet in your next post you admit that " I did enjoy mocking you", and sign off with the awfully pathetic "See you later, loser".

So perhaps you need to look yourself in the mirror. To paraphrase your own question:

You should report them at every opportunity, one of the posters (BWFC71) thinks he's immune to any reprimand because he thinks he's friendly with the editor but to me it looks like he's the worst of the lot !!.
There's also a phone number to call the editor if you should wish to.

im sorry but please stop posting, take the idiot getajobs advice above and get help from a doctor and stop living in a fantasy life, he may be argumentative but it seems he is pretty spot on with you mental state, its not great is it ????

posting make believe flight details to impress a bunch of people who dont know you is really pathetic, did you get a private jet ??? let me guess you will reply you drove to london or anywhere that backs up your made up flight time

please get help, if you wish i can provide you with a good friends details who works with the mental health team down at K2 in bolton, she is very easy to deal with and has a great deal of success with individuals that need help dealing with life ( that are struggling )

You have probably put it on here hundreds of times but dont want to pass it on without your consent, i remember reading your facebook details and some other bits and bobs but again i dont want to pull personal info from other implosions you have had unless you are willing

I didn't destroy the thread, though. The person called "getajob" did by not only making up space with infantile non English grammar, but by also quoting every single post and not once in a row but five times or more in a row before I tried to get him to stop - before it turned into an infantile argument which you actually got involved with on more than one occasion!!!
And how am I suppose to curb these encroaches on to what was a decent discussion when the internet editor says he is doing something, when clearly he isn't, I have in the past reported the posts and nothing have been done and it is clearly that I am target for these individuals no matter what I post!!! Yes I lost my rag the other night, big style, and I have been warned by the internet editor, but has the commentator rogues been warned - by the looks of it no they haven't, and they are still carrying on their infantile attempt to destroy the reputation of this website. Yes I haven't helped but it seems no one else is trying to do anything and these rogues are running amok!

wow the thumbs down really do soome like one person as i assume 50 people are not reading this story so i empathise with you there, it seems some loner/freak has too much time on his hands

however, dont concern yourself with others and there internet activity and address your own, its unhealthy, ive spent 30 minutes reading your last few weeks posts tonight and im worried about you, its not normal ( your internet implosions )

you keep telling tall tales about investments, international businesses that you own, europeanflights in the morning, but actually just be reading your last posts i can tell you live in bolton, you are single, you work as an accident claims advisor in spinningfields and you get the train every day.

its not a life to be embarrased at, infact you seem like you are doing just fine, working in a company providing legal advice ( with potential to get promotions and qualifications and work you way up from where you are right now etc, mabe become a solicitor with time), so why not live your actual life instead of the bad lie that you live by??

Im sure you are a really nice chap, work 40hrs a week, pay tax etc etc

so why pretend to be richard branson ???? we both know you are not in amsterdam, you were not in belgium/prague/germa
ny or wherever you were pretending to be last week/week before/etc and we both know you dont own 3 businesses in europe, so what !!!!! neither do I... nor does my neighbour

my point is............ you sound fine carerr wise where you are right now, stop living in a fantasy existance and start futhering and bettering your life that you actually have, and concentrate on the other issues you have which need addressing

this is my last post since i dont know you, please provide contact details so i can get wendy to add you to the crisis list and get started on a plan to get you back into the real world ( somewhere which you seem you will do really well in if you get help )

sincerely

Gary
