VISITORS enjoyed the wind in their sails at an open day at Jumbles Sailing Club.

More than 120 people of all ages took to the water.

For most, it was their first taste of sailing and, thanks to lively wind and scattered sunshine, all were able to enjoy the thrill of racing through the water in a heeling boat.

All were accompanied by experienced sailors from the club and some decided to join immediately.

In all, about 200 people took advantage of the fine weather to enjoy the surroundings of the club, in Jumbles Country Park, Edgworth.

Commodore Brian Hoy said: “We were delighted with the level of interest and hope some of the visitors will be inspired to return to join us and discover the fun of sailing, which is a great sport for all ages.

“We encourage both pottering around on the water and competitive racing, all are welcome.

“Just drop in for an hour and we’d be happy show you around.”

The family-focused club, founded in 1975, has recently extended its facilities to provide new changing rooms, disabled facilities and a new storage area for the power boatsused to oversee safety on the water.

The club, which is open on Sundays for most of the year, provides both racing and social sailing, and is also an approved Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training centre, with weekend courses for beginners to the more advanced.
