HUNDREDS of people turned out to support a mother with terminal cancer by raising funds for the charity providing her treatment.

A charity run and family fun day was organised by Rowena Darby, who was diagnosed with the disease last year, with help from Bolton-based company Enriched Events.

Mrs Darby’s biggest wish is to see her son Freddie start school in September, something made possible thanks to chemotherapy and an alternative cancer treatment called Mistletoe Therapy.

This treatment was provided by Camphill Wellbeing Trust.

Mrs Darby, who lives with husband Phil and Freddie in Turton, said: “The whole day was absolutely amazing. I’m over the moon with the support I’ve received from my family, friends and everyone in the village.

“All through the day, people were stopping me and giving me their best wishes and the turnout was massive.

“Normally for fun runs like this you would get 50 or 60 runners, so to get 260 is fantastic.

“One of the highlights was seeing Freddie run with his grandparents. It was a lovely day all round.”

The event at The Barlow Institute in Edgworth included a 10 and 5k run and a ‘mini mighty’ 5k relay featuring 35 children aged two to four, which Mrs Darby’s son Freddie took part in.

Mrs Darby’s mother, father, sister and husband were among 260 runners to take part in the 10k run and her friends from St Albans, York, Nottingham and Derbyshire came to Bolton for the event.

The final total raised by the event is not yet known.

Mrs Darby’s son Freddie will start at Scallywags Pre-School in Blackburn Road, Edgworth in September.
