'More women in cabinet? They can make the tea', says Bolton's first UKIP councillor

BOLTON’S first UKIP councillor has refused to apologise for posting derogatory comments about women on his Facebook page — despite criticism from his own party and female politicians.

Little Lever councillor Paul Richardson posted the comment after the government’s cabinet reshuffle last week, which saw five female MPs made senior ministers.

The Bolton News:

He wrote: “Cameron promotes more women to the Cabinet. Well, they can take it in turns to make the tea — only joking!”

The comments have sparked a backlash from the town’s leading female politicians, including Bolton MPs Julie Hilling and Yasmin Qureshi, but Cllr Richardson has refused to remove the post.

Cllr Richardson said he would “defend the right to have a bit of light-hearted banter” and stressed he was fully supportive of the female appointments to the cabinet.

But UKIP’s Bolton chairman, Joan Johnson, said she was offended by Cllr Richardson’s remarks and was “very sad” about the post.

She added: “At the end of the day it’s his idea of joke, and frankly he should know better to put it on Facebook for the world to see. It’s very unwise.

“He should apologise. I also take it personally as a woman, as I do believe in equal rights and equality.

MORE:

“I’ve never had a problem at all with being a woman in UKIP. It does put the party in Bolton in a bad light and makes it look misogynistic, but it isn’t and it won’t be. It’s not that sort of party.”

Labour’s Julie Hilling, MP for Bolton West, called the post “offensive”.

She said: “It’s one of those things that as a woman, if you don’t laugh you have no sense of humour.

“But some things people think are jokes just really aren’t funny.

“When people make these comments, instead of looking at the merits of the people being appointed, I think it just shows we are nowhere close to treating men and women the same in politics.”

MP for Bolton South East Yasmin Qureshi added she thought Cllr Richardson’s comments reflected the views of many UKIP members.

She said: “Does he expect his fellow UKIP councillor to make tea for him when he’s in the town hall?

“It’s a shame that a councillor in my constituency has such an old-fashioned attitude towards women, but we should not be surprised as many UKIP members have been pretty derogatory about women over the years.

“It just shows how deep in its heart UKIP is a regressive party, full of misogynists and people with warped views.”

Cllr Richardson said it was “tough” if Ms Johnson found his comments offensive.

He added he believed the ministers were promoted on merit and would do “a brilliant job”.

The 68-year-old said: “I’m not sexist, I’m not racist — I don’t have an ‘ism’ in my body. I’m not that judgemental.

“People ought to get a sense of humour.

“The comment was tongue-in-cheek, and I posted it expecting my friends to give that kind of reaction.

“Am I suppose to completely change my attitude towards life when I become a councillor? I know when to be serious and when not to be serious. It was a joke. Some people found it funny, other people didn’t.

“In hindsight it was unwise, but I refuse to let go of my sense of humour and a joke in the context of comments by national commentators in the printed media and in the broadcast media suggested Cameron had only appointed the women as window dressing.

“If people were offended they don’t have a sense of humour, and I feel sorry for them. I’m not going to say my remark was offensive because it wasn’t intended as offensive and the vast majority of people won’t see it as offensive.”

Cllr Richardson was voted on to the council in May, with UKIP colleague Diane Parkinson, who is the official leader of the UKIP group in the council chamber.

The pair were the first UKIP councillors to be elected in Greater Manchester, taking seats from Labour and the Conservatives respectively.

Yes Mrs Quereshi UKIP supporters do treat women terribly. I hear in parts of the country that they treat women like second class citizens and force them to cover their entire body in public, genitally mutilate them, pray in separate buildings, force them to marry strangers at a young age and have even been known to kill their own daughters in the name of family honour. Those Terrible UKIP people when will they stop the madness.

Or maybe it was just a joke!!!!!!!

For gods sake he was having a joke, it seems people now just cant wait for a remark so they can be offended, but as far as the latest re-shuffle is concened it shouldnt matter what sex you are to be appointed in control of a department, what does matter is 'are they up to the task and have the right qualifications' if you have to have a percentage women, men, black, white etc then all you are doing is trying to be politically correct and therefore we all lose out as you wont have the best person for the job

The comment was a bit of a daft one and shows the perils of putting comments on Facebook when you are an elected politician.

I think what makes it such an issue for him is that he sat there and typed it out and had plenty of opportunities to press delete and think better of it but decided to do it anyway.

At the end of the day, it is a tired, boring and not very original joke.

I realise the national press, being entirely under the control of the Tories and the Labour Party will search out any story to try to mock UKIP by searching for irrelevant comments by individual members and to try to find any story that they can manipulate for political point scoring, so it's not really a surprise that a rag like the BEN will follow the same course.

"But UKIP’s Bolton chairman, Joan Johnson, said she was offended by Cllr Richardson’s remarks and was “very sad” about the post."

The chairman, Joan Johnson (I'm glad that the word 'chairman' was used rather than referring to people as a piece of wooden furniture) should have been more supportive of Paul, and not fallen into the trap set by the MPs.

It's a bit rich of Julie Hilling to make any complaint, having won the right to be an MP through being on a (very sexist) female only shortlist, and also of Yasmin Qureshi, only being an MP by virtue of being planted in a safe Labour seat in Bolton SE. At least Paul won his council seat fair and square.

Personally speaking, I don't mind a bit of banter, and obviously Mr PG tips made the comment to create a bit of controversy..to create comments from the other councillors who think they are championing a cause, by jumping on it with self important, politically correct drivel.
I personally abhor the politically correct generation of politicians who seize on every opportunity to pump up their esteem to themselves, whilst attempting to take away from the populace their sense of humour, by trying to make them feel guilty for having a laugh..at a joke.
I'm pretty sure my council tax..income tax..and all other taxes contribute in one way or several other to paying for the outraged councillor(s) comments..which to ME personally...is no joke in the slightest. (you are paid to do a job at the council...NOT (in my opinion spend time engaging in sh*te like this))
I suggest that such councillors should forget about the odd joke here and there..and start actually performing their duties to the general public.
I want my councillors to actually win their seat by being totally awesome at sorting out the problems we are all facing....with a sense of humour, rather than alienating themselves even further from their constituents than they already are...by harping on about stuff that your voters are more than capable of dealing with...and have done all our lives.
WE elected YOU..now start doing a proper job..and stop trying to take the power of laughter from our lives.
Most of us are more than capable of thinking for ourselves, we don't need YOU ..(councillors) to tell us what to think, or have you force your opinion on us...because most of all we will resent it as would YOU (councillors) IF you had to obey some unwritten rule that went against your quality of life .

“It just shows how deep in its heart UKIP is a regressive party, full of misogynists and people with warped views.”

Whilst I agree that these comments were wrong and foolish - the sheer hypocrisy of Ms Hilling and Ms Qureshi is staggering. They were very quiet when their colleague Labour MP Helen Goodman said the following:

Does this show that "deep in their hearts" the Labour party is "regressive"? That the Labour party is "nowhere close to treating men and women the same in politics". If they feel so strongly on this matter, I assume they will also be on record as condemning Ms Goodman's ridiculous comments.

Spot-on both of you.

We have a snoozepaper over-run with political correctness and not a news paper, that is sh*t scared of upsetting anybody and everybody. And by this article being the front page then that says it all.

Hilling, Qureshi, Johnson and especially UAF chief reporter O'Flynn, hopefully the response by Boltonians, from women and men, to this non-story will set your mind in the right direction as to how most Boltonians banter in everyday life; give you a glimpse of our sense of humour - sometimes cutting edge, sometimes "old-fashioned"; how we view our past with a pinch of salt; and more importantly what we think of the political correctness that you hold so dear.

What's interesting is that REAL sexism, misogyny and derogation of women - the everyday stories of abuse under the banner of religion (no jokes involved there), will never ever be addressed by Hilling and Qureshi, Ok no surprise there as their PC has a Whip and they have selfish riches to persue.

But O'Flynn is supposed to be a journalist..!

The Bolton News aren't alone in this, the problem with newspaper journalism is most reporters come through the university graduate system and at the age of 20,21,22 are steeped in years of socialist indoctrination at university, What local newspapers would be better of doing is hiring local people who have a natural flair for journalism. Some of the Facebook pages/web blogs i see are designed brilliantly by individuals who have no uni or college experience. To me news reporters in their 20's will never command respect,my hero's are John Simpson,Jeremy Bowen,Michael Buerk, even Paxman, who all learned their trade and never gave their personal views away.Their command of English, their wealth of knowledge and descriptive analysis is top class. On local rags the standard of journalism has dropped like a stone the past decade. The BN does have a couple of decent reporters but by and large most are mediocre, the Manchester Evening News and Lancs Telegraph aren't any better. The BN at one time had some good columnists too,Shawcross,Kelly,
Graham but as said the overall standard has fallen as the price has rocketed. I can't see the BN surviving another 5 years unless it amalgamates maybe with the LT. Print journalism is on its last legs and the last knockings are upon most publications.

I agree completely.

I wouldn't pay the majority of the BN journo's with holes from Polo mints!

I've seen far better grammar and spelling from kids who are still in school. Just because someone has attended Journalism college, survived the experience and come out the other end with a certificate, doesn't make them a good Journalist. This is evident in just about most of the news websites I read, and I read a lot.

The group who own the Bolton News, The Bury Times etc etc also need to change the country and language settings for their website to UK English.

Last time I saw the face value of the BN I think it was 60p. That's ridiculous for what amounts to no more than toilet paper.

That's ridiculous for what amounts to no more than toilet paper. wsw69

Don't read into it,don't buy into it.
Just another publicity gimmick,"publicity wether good or bad is publicity" so they keep saying!just keeps UKIP in your minds and tries to let you know they are still here,as they don't have any other agenda on their manifesto apart from immigration, thus unless there is a debate going on somewhere about immigration they are out of the public eye with nothing else to offer.so what better way than to let you know they are still around than using a cheap publicity stunt by coming out with statements like that.
Many UKIP party members have done sonething similar in the past and not one (that Im aware of) has lost their position, which leads one to believe that it's part of their game to make some of you cringe and some of you laugh at these remarks, there's alot of people out there that will take this as a bit of nudge nudge wink wink humour and won't put them off voting for a plonker like that. For me it just goes to show that we must be so desperate and dispondent to allow a party like that to get anywhere near a position of power or influence!Ive seen raving lunatics on a soap box at speakers corner,Hyde park sound more intelligent than UKIP !
Just goes to show that having nothing up top,but the balls to try is all the requirements you need to get into politics!

Forget the joke, why is he an idiot or who voted for him idiots?
You must think a lot of yourself to make these remarks especially the remark in reference to the voters.

Lets be fair the majority of people, being able to vote, in the Little Lever and Darcy Lever Ward did NOT vote for Paul Richardson!

Therefore he only became a Councillor on the first past the post system. He only gained 33.2% (or 1255 votes) out of a turnout of only 3778 votes (39.5%), So basically he only got voted by 13% of those eligible to vote. He doesn't represent the majority of people - even of those who did vote, he does not represent the majority!!!

As any politician there are a few simple, common sense, rules that have to be followed.

Social media can be read by ANYONE so are has to be made when making comments, whether serious or in jest as any comment can be misrepresented!
Adding "-only joking" doesn't mean anything as the comment has been made
The Councillors are their to represent EVERYONE and not just who they want to and as such should not be making any comments that could alienate a part of their constituents as net elections they could be voted out!!!

Actually, that story about Muslims refusing to sell alcohol in M&S was proved to have been fabricated in the right wing press so that people like you could have something to get cross about. You're a mug for falling for it, hook, line and sinker.

Three cheers for NOT believing everything you read in the Daily Mail.

I think your missing the whole point here, whether the story was true or not is not the point... it's a joke I put on, and quite a good one I thought IMHO, looks like your annoyed and a joke as I'm certainly not annoyed.
Also just to clarify I have never read a morning paper for over 20 years.

How many girls do you know who are forced to wear clothing head to toe.
How many girls do you know who have been genitally mutulated, treat as second class citizens .... Probably non whatsoever.
