BOLTON funnyman Peter Kay is reported to be bringing back hit sitcom Phoenix Nights next year.

The comedian is said to be in talks to perform seven live shows for of the comedy, based in a fictional working men’s club in Farnworth, for Comic Relief.

One of the live shows will be televised, a national paper has written, while Mr Kay will then do promotional work for his return to the small screen.

The show gained cult status after running for two series in 2001 and 2002, as it followed the life of wheelchair-bound club owner Brian Potter, played by Mr Kay, as he tries to make the venue the most popular in Britain.

Mr Kay, who switched on the illuminations in Blackpool last night, also confirmed he will make a rare live appearance at the Blackpool Opera House for a question and answer session on Saturday, November 15, in aid of Salford Women’s Aid Domestic Violence Refuges.

The 41-year-old said: “A friend of mine works for Salford Women’s Refuges, which unfortunately is greatly overlooked as a charity.

“After hearing the shocking statistics and discussing the invaluable work they do I felt it was crucial to try and raise some much needed funds so they can continue offering vulnerable victims, including children, help when they need it most.

“If I can put on a special night that helps benefit the charity in some way and have some fun in the process, how could I pass on such a good opportunity?”

Fans will be invited to submit questions in advance, as well as vote on their favourite Peter Kay clips which will be shown on the night.

Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, September 2 at 9.30am from www.gigandtours.com and www.ticketmaster.co.uk.

Well Dave Spikey who co-wrote the show and was the other main character was asked on TV a couple of weeks ago if he would be doing any more Phoenix Nights and he said no way.

If Spikey and Fitzmaurice aren't involved in the writing (and they won't be because neither of them will work with Kay), it won't be Phoenix Nights.

It will be a weak, watered down and far less funny shadow of the original and Paddy McUseless will probably play far too large a role in it.

I honestly cannot understand why Kay is so lauded as a "comedy great", as he has made a career out of rehashing the same material for the best part of twenty years.
