PEOPLE living in The Haulgh may have spotted something strange in their neighbourhood in recent days.

But there is no need to call Ghostbusters. It is just Bolton car enthusiasts Jeff Wilkes and Paul Gildea who are selling their Slimer car for a bargain £399.

The green ghost, from the 1984 film and spin-off cartoon, adorns the Mazda 626 which the pair kitted out for the Benidorm or Bust rally, held at the end of May.

Mr Wilkes, from Jeff's Auto Electrics, Bury Old Road, said: “It’s just a laugh.

“Slimer is made out of a compost bucket and then just silicone, wood and a drainpipe, anything we could find.

“Most people just put stickers on their cars but we went a bit over the top.”

They spent four Sundays transforming the car, painting it green and daubing it with silicone to create the slime effect.

Their efforts were rewarded when it won best car, scooping them £500 at the annual rally — a 1,500 mile challenge which sees people drive from Blackpool to Benidorm in an array of vehicles and old bangers.

Many take part to raise money for charity and, at their first rally in 2011, the pair raised more then £1,000 for Bolton Hospice.

Their other vehicles include a Ghostbusters car which they entered into the rally four times and sold for £1,000 in June.

Mr Wilkes, of St Aubin’s Road, The Haulgh said: “People take photos. The Ghostbusters one was the best one we ever did.”

They hope someone will snap up the Slimer car, driven in the latest rally by Mr Wilkes’ son Carl, for future events.

Father-of-two Mr Wilkes, aged 54, said: “There’s quite a few of these rallies, there’s two at the end of this month.

“It will quite easily do another. There’s nothing wrong with the car apart from that it’s got a big head on its roof.”

Once it is sold, they plan to start working on creating an eye-catching design for their next cross-country drive.

Mr Gildea, aged 47, who has worked at Gilly’s Garage, Plevna Street, Bolton, for 15 years, said: “It’s top secret.”

GHOSTBUSTERS IS SET TO RETURN

GHOSTBUSTERS is returning to UK cinemas later this year to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

It is due to be screened in cinemas across the country on October 28, following an anniversary Blu-Ray DVD release in September.

The 1984 supernatural comedy film starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as a trio who start a ghost-catching business in New York, going after ghouls including translucent green blob creature, Slimer.

Slimer, also known as Onionhead and Little Spud, has a gigantic appetite and leaves slime behind whenever he passes through solid objects.

In the film, he is never actually called by a name but was called Slimer in the subsequent cartoon and 1989 film sequel Ghostbusters II.
