A MUSICAL about the greatest show on Earth would have to be a pretty good show in itself to work

With Sir Cameron Mackintosh at the helm of the updated version of the classic musical, expectations were high and Barnum did not disappoint.

Down in the stalls and real-life circus performers entertained audience members as they took their seats at the Palace Theatre, Manchester.

As soon as Brian Conley stepped on stage, the jokes started and he commanded the stage with the kind of presence only a seasoned performer of several decades can.

The musical follows the irrepressible imagination and dreams of Phineas T Barnum, America’s Greatest Showman, and is brought to dazzling life by a talented cast.

Far from being a circus show, although there are impressive tricks and acrobatics, Barnum features spot-on choreography, catchy tunes including Come Follow The Band, The Colours Of My Life and There Is A Sucker Born Ev’ry Minute, a stunning set and the story of PT Barnum's life and his marriage to Chairy.

As the old saying goes — behind every great man, there's a great woman — and this was certainly true for Barnum, the American showman and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Brian demonstrates his versatility as an actor, apparently effortlessly singing, dancing, acting and even tightrope walking in the energetic role which has seen the 53-year-old shed more than a stone in weight.

Linzi Hateley also puts in a strong performance as Chairy, revealing a couple who looked at the world from opposite sides of the spectrum.

Act One of the musical was an absolute delight, which had me smiling throughout, before the couple hits trouble in Act II.

If a fun and fast-paced show is what you fancy, roll up, roll up to the Palace Theatre before the circus leaves town.
