VOLUNTEERS are desperately needed to join the scouts and the guides in Bolton — after figures revealed there were scores of youngsters waiting to join the association.

Almost 100 girls are waiting to join girl guiding groups in the town, with a shortage of volunteers particularly affecting Bromley Cross, Egerton and Astley Bridge.

Scouts are also appealing for more volunteers.

For every volunteer that signs up, six or more youngsters could be allowed to join a scouts or girl guiding group.

John Walsh, Conservative councillor for Astley Bridge, said: “I know many organisations such as scouts and girl guides are having increasing problems in recruiting leaders.

“I would hope that those people who have benefited from being members of these groups when they were young would commit to taking up a role.

“I know that there are a lot of pressures on people’s time but a huge number of young people would benefit from more volunteers coming forward.”

County fire chief Steve McGuirk, who is also the county president of the Scout Association for the Greater Manchester North area, added: “Scouting is amazing for both young people and adults alike.

“It is great for boosting self confidence, adding quality skills to your CV and most of all it’s a great way to have fun, that is why I encourage my staff to help in any way they can.”

A spokesman for Lancs Border County Girlguiding said: "With each new volunteer we can offer more girls the fantastic opportunity to experience all that guiding offers. In return, we offer everyone support, specialised training and the opportunity to develop new skills, meet new people and have fun."

Bolton-based scout leader Margaret Broadfoot said: “I have been a volunteer for a long time and I love it when a young person tries an activity for the first time and has a huge smile on their face.

“That’s when I know I’ve made a difference."
