NEWBORN girls in Bolton are set to live longer compared to their neighbours in Greater Manchester — with boys faring less well.

New figures released by the Office of National Statistics show the life expectancy for males is now 77.6 years and 81.6 years for females born in 2011 to 2013.

For women it is the third highest life expectancy out of the 10 Greater Manchester authorities, behind Trafford at 83.5 years and Stockport at 83 years.

However the male life expectancy is joint fifth in Greater Manchester with Oldham, behind Trafford, Stockport, Bury and Wigan.

The life expectancy for both sexes in Bolton is less than the North West average of 78 years old for men, and 81.8 for women.

Manchester had the lowest life expectancy in the country for newborn baby girls at 80 years, compared with the highest in Chiltern of 86.4 years.
