NEW woodlands and orchards are being created in Bolton as part of a government initiative.

The Big Tree Plant initiative, which is being delivered by Red Rose Forest, will see thousands of new trees planted across Greater Manchester.

These trees will be created with the help of local communities, businesses, schools and universities.

The government initiative, which has ran every year since 2011, is aimed at creating one million new trees across the UK by April next year.

Kevin Wigley, green streets officer at Red Rose Forest, said: “Making our towns and cities greener by planting new woodland and orchards delivers a range of benefits for people and wildlife. It creates new opportunities for exercise and recreation, can improve health and wellbeing, makes places more attractive to visitors and investors and can help urban areas become more resilient to flooding and climate change.”

Red Rose Forest will host a series of planting events over the coming months as part of The Big Tree Plant initiative.
