WORK is continuing to improve one of the borough's most popular paths.

Resurfacing work, new drainage ditches, new steps, paths, benches and signs will all be installed as part of a £423,000 project to improve the Roe Green loop line, starting from Worsley station.

The seven kilometre former railway line, which runs from Monton to Bolton, is popular with walkers and cyclists and is part of the National Cycle Network.

Improvement works have already been carried out between Cleggs Lane, Little Hulton, Tynesbank in Walkden and from Monton Green up to the station.

The latest project means that the path is closed for 14 weeks from the former Worsley station under the motorway bridge towards Roe Green and under the East Lancs Road to Mesne Lea Primary School.

Cllr Derek Antrobus, assistant mayor for strategic planning, said: "The improvements to the loop line will provide a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists, as well children cycling to school. We're sorry to have to close the line for a short period, but this is to enable contractors to operate safely. Although some disruption will be experienced while the works are being delivered, the long term benefits will be great to see."
