THE author of a book which features her grandmother's 100-year-old recipes has been invited to cook one of them on the new Mel and Sue show.

Pat Matthews, aged 68, was approached by the new ITV chat show in November as they were looking for people to cook live on the show.

Mrs Matthews released Grandma's Antique Recipes in January last year after inheriting her Grandma Sarah's book of old recipes for cakes, cures, medicines, furniture polishes and handy hints from days gone by written in elegant Victorian handwriting.

The programme, which unites comics Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins in their first live chat show in more than 16 years, features a different cook each day who will prepare a dish along with celebrity guests.

Famous faces that will be appearing on the first week of the series, starting on Monday, include Jennifer Saunders, Gemma Arterton, Gareth Malone, Dermot O'Leary and Jo Brand.

Mrs Matthews, of Longfield Road, Middle Hulton, said: "They haven't given me an exact day I will be appearing yet but I am hoping it will be soon. They will be having sweet days and savoury days on the show, so depending on when I appear will depend on what I make. It's all very exciting.

"I received an email from the production company in November while I was on holiday asking me if I would be interested in appearing on the show. It was a total surprise and I didn't know what they would want me to do.

"Last month I went down to London to do like a test film where I had to cook an omelette in front of the camera while they asked me about what my favourite thing to cook was.

"I spoke about Grandma Sarah's Simnel cake because I love the story behind it where the marzipan balls represent the 12 apostles — minus Judas of course.

"I am used to being in front of the camera for the videos on my website, but I'm sure it'll be a bit nerve wracking when I'm there. I can't wait."

The Mel and Sue show starts on Monday, January 12, on ITV at 4pm daily.
