HOUSEWIVES in a street in Bolton were up in arms about the building of a new British Legion club back in September 1970.
Apparently work on the new Astley Bridge British Legion Club was, they said, completely blocking a narrow back street.
They claimed that paving stones were being cracked by machines, gutters were filled with cement and the air was so dirty from the building works that they could not even hang their washing out.
The street in question was Back Blackburn Road which was a narrow street running between the housewives' homes and the new club which, at that time, was being built in Belmont Road.
In the Bolton Evening News photograph we can see one of the women who had made the complaint surveying the pile of bricks and rubble left by the workman — it seems fair enough to say that the building materials were blocking the road.
Perhaps there were also concerns for the old vehicle parked on the left of the picture — the lorry which was carrying the bricks looks parked precariously close to the car it would seem.
