THE steaks are high for a Bolton butchers — as they prepare for the finals of a national good food competition.

Frasers in Rishton Lane, Great Lever, have created a steak and caramelised onion burger to enter into this year's Butchers Q Guild 2015 BBQ competition to find the country's highest quality food.

The 5oz burger, made with a mixture of beef skirt and rump tail with a special pocket filled with juicy onions, will be showcased in front of a top barbecue chef at the finals which will be held in Coventry on May 31.

It is not the first time that the shop has been awarded for its creations – last year it won the overall competition with its prize sausage.

Manager Greg Hull, who has run the business for 27 years, said: "We are really thrilled to be in the finals and can't wait to see what the judges think."

The burger was created by Mr Hull, his son Andrew Hull, assistant manager Alison Woodcock and butchers Caroline Bradley and Steve Fergusson.

Mr Hull added: "It's nice to be recognised for something different this year. It took us about two months to come up with the recipe but the feedback we have had has been really positive.

"Onions are really popular with burgers so we thought; why not add that ingredient into the burger? We knew from speaking to people that it is the right combination.

"The burger itself is made with the best quality ingredients – better than anything you will ever find at a supermarket. Hopefully it will be a winning combination for us."

The finals of the competition are due to take place at the Windmill Village Hotel on Sunday, May 31.
