TEENAGER Alex Wood might have left primary school many years ago — but the 17-year-old hasn't forgotten his lessons at Egerton Primary.

And this Sunday, the Turton Sixth Form student will be showing his support for his former school by taking part in the Manchester 10K to raise money for current pupils.

Alex, who lives in Egerton, is part of a team made up of teachers, parents, and friends of the school who will be taking part in Europe's biggest 10K running event.

He said: "I haven't been back to school since I left, and it was nice going back to see how it had changed — it is nice to be supporting a local organisation.

"I've recently taken up running — I've been using it as a way to relax between revision — and this is a challenge."

Alex, who was member of the national sailing squad, and international youth sailing squad, added: "But I think that others have been doing more training than me."

He laughed that he may leave his mum, Tarnia, behind is she does not keep up with him.

Headteacher Sam Mitchell said: "The children at Egerton CP School greatly benefit from the work of our local charity Friends of Egerton.

"Over the years, they have raised money that always comes back to school and supports our work by enhancing the experiences of our young people. "

Chairman of Friends of Egerton, Joyce Carroll said: "A number of months ago one of our mums suggested running the Manchester 10K.

"We now have a team of 15 people running which is made up of PTA members, mums and dads and staff including the head teacher.

"It's nice to support a charity close to home for me personally.

"We get to see the difference it makes to our children and see the benefit first hand.

"Children usually carry lots of memories from their school years and if we can in some way and help create even more fun times it makes it all so worthwhile."
