FIREFIGHTERS rescued an elderly cat from a home in Breightmet after a dishwasher caught fire.
The 22-year-old pet was trapped in an upstairs bedroom in a house in Embleton Close while the blaze, which was sparked by an electrical fault, raged in the kitchen downstairs.
The cat’s owner, a woman in her fifties, was alerted to the fire by her smoke alarm and managed to get herself out of the property and call 999.
When firefighters arrived at the scene at about 10.10pm last night they rescued the cat from the bedroom before putting out the blaze.
The fire destroyed parts of the kitchen and left the rest of the house heavily smoke damaged.
Neither the cat nor its owner suffered any injuries.
