A fire has destroyed nearly half of a sports centre in Bury.

Emergency crews were called to the Goshen Sports Centre in Tennyson Avenue.

The gym was completely gutted and about £100,000 of sports equipment was wrecked.

Police and fire investigators have launched an inquiry into the cause of the blaze, which happened at about 9.30pm on Monday night.

The gym was used by about 1,000 gymnasts of all ages from Bury Olympic Gymnastic Club.

Neil Long, borough leisure services officer for Bury Council, said: "It is very early days but our main priority is finding somewhere for the users of the leisure centre to carry on their sporting activities.

"We will be doing everything we can to accommodate them locally and we'll be working with the emergency services very closely to identify the cause.

"The sports club is devastated by the loss of facilities and we urge anyone who has any information relating to the circumstances of the fire to contact the police."
