IN response to C A Wilson (April 7), I feel I just have to comment on the statement that the proposed swimming pool "will, in effect, be a facility for the University of Bolton", which the council should not have to pay for.

Furthermore, the suggestion that this pool will not be "accessed by the general public". Am I alone in wondering how these conclusions have been drawn?

I remember The Water Place fondly as a child. It was sad when it had to go, but, with over £750,000 of debt, this was inevitable.

Bolton had a town centre swimming pool to benefit the whole community, and it failed to stay afloat.

Who can blame the council for using some initiative and getting student backing behind this new venture? As far as I am aware, student access does not automatically exclude the general public.

As for escorting children to the pool; if they are old enough and wise enough to attend a swimming pool alone, then one would hope they can cross a busy road. After all, swimming is not risk free.

Just for once, can we give the council some support, and be enthusiastic to their attempts at rectifying a bad situation?

And, no, I don't work for the council!
