IT is vital that the final decision over traffic calming measures on Crompton Way is the right one.
Work to reduce part of the road from two lanes to one is already under way and is likely to be completed by the end of this week, despite opposition from many people.
Proposals to cut speed limits on the road from 40mph to 30mph have, however, quite rightly been put on hold.
Clearly, many people are worried that drivers travelling too fast along Crompton Way are putting lives at risk.
Others, though, point out that most accidents are not speed-related and, with other traffic calming measures being carried out, there is no need to reduce speeds.
Whatever the final decision, councillors must make sure it is one that ensures traffic is still able to flow freely as well as safely.
