IT is right that a special remembrance ceremony will take place in Bolton for Genocide Memorial Day.

Last year's decision to scrap the annual Holocaust Memorial Day in favour of an inclusive service for all faiths was ill judged, although we recognise it was made with good intention.

It brought criticism from religious leaders and some councillors, who said the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where 1.5 million people were murdered during World War II, should be marked with a full town hall ceremony.

We agree that people need to be reminded of the horrific events at Auschwitz, but see no reason why another ceremony to mark genocide cannot be heldon another date.
