A GRANDMOTHER and her son and daughter have appeared in court charged with human trafficking and slavery.

The three family members are alleged to have brought a man to England from Poland in 2010 and forced him to work unpaid for five years.

In two hearings at Bolton Magistrates Court 47-year-old Rozalia Siwak, son Damian Siwak, aged 30, and daughter Roksana Siwak, aged 25, all of Gibraltar Street, Bolton, pleaded not guilty to the offences.

They were remanded in custody until June 26 when they will appear at Bolton Crown Court.

Police are continuing their investigations and are attempting to trace two further men who may have been victims of people trafficking and slavery.

The arrests followed inquiries made by officers from the police's Bolton organised crime and child sexual exploitation unit after hospital workers became worried about the condition of a man who arrived in the accident and emergency department.

The Siwak family is alleged to have held the man in slavery between September 23, 2010, and June 6 this year.

Although the unit is more used to dealing with cases involving young women being brought to work in Bolton, it also deals with all forms of people exploitation.

Speaking before the court case, Det Insp Charlotte Cadden said: "I do want to stress to the people of Bolton that we will investigate all reports of human trafficking and modern slavery thoroughly.

"Tackling this issue here in Bolton is an absolute priority for us."
