IT is not a job for the faint-hearted.

A circus is appealing for a brave volunteer to have flaming knives thrown at them to stand in for a performer who was taken ill.

Planet Circus is currently performing at Spa Road and is asking for any daredevils in Bolton who are up for the challenge to come forward.

Volunteers would also be kitted out with a costume for the show.

Jo McMullan, manager of the circus, said: "One of our acts was taken ill so she is unable to perform in our shows while we are here.

"We are looking for a female aged between 18 and 30 for just 20 minutes of each show.

"It is not like the knife throwing acts you see on the TV. The knives don't actually go that close, they go about a foot away from you.

"It will be a great opportunity for someone local to take part in the show. If someone is brave enough to come and take part that would be great."

The spectacular circus show features a wide range of performers from around the world, including the Globe of Death motorcycle stunt team.

The stunt sees eight motorcyclists speeding around inside a steel cage at speeds of more than 60mph, including young stunt rider Peter Pavlov, who has appeared on Britain's Got Talent.

Other performers include the Faltiny Family, who will showcase a range of exciting acts, daredevil acrobatics on the 'Wheel of Death', pole balancer Manuel from Cuba and entertainment from Andrea the clown.

Anyone who is willing to volunteer to take the role should contact the box office on 07563 727 206.

The circus will be at Spa Road until Sunday, with performances at 5pm and 7.30pm on Friday, at 2pm and 5pm on Saturday, and at 1pm and 3pm on Sunday. Tickets are priced from £5.99.
