CHARITIES in Bolton can apply for grants from the charitable arm of The Bolton News.

The Gannett Foundation is the charitable arm of Gannett, which owns Bolton News publishers Newsquest Media Group.

We are looking for projects that bring lasting benefits to the community will consider applications of any size or ambition.

Typically our grants are modest sums for practical projects, but we frequently award sums of £10,000 or more to larger projects which deserve our backing.

An application may be for neighbourhood improvement, youth enterprise or to help the disabled. The foundation will favour projects that demonstrate good planning, oversight and financial responsibility.

We are able to join with other contributors to support elements of larger projects, though we prefer to be in a position of making a donation which will fund a project entirely or which constitutes the final instalment to complete a project.

Only registered charities can apply and must submit copies of their most recent financial accounts.

Any supporting materials and further details about the charity should be included with each submission.

Each nomination will be judged by trustees — and their decision is final.

During the past 10 years the foundation has made grants of over £4 million with several groups in Bolton winning handouts.

Last year Bolton Hospice was chosen by judges as one of the good causes to benefit.

Another charity to have benefited from a Gannett Foundation grant is Newstalk — an organisation which provides a recorded weekly bulletin from The Bolton News to blind or partially sighted people — or who have a temporary disability that makes it hard for them to read the newspaper.

The charity received £9,600 which paid for a new computer system, 350 memory sticks and speakers.

Another charity to benefit was Harmony Youth Project, which provides young people in Bolton with a wide range of activities, including dance, music, creative writing, graphics and art. It was awarded £3,392.

Applications must be submitted on the approved application form, which can be downloaded at theboltonnews.co.uk. It should be sent via email to lisa.schofield@nqnw.co.uk.

Submissions on paper are not encouraged, but if unavoidable, they must be sent to The Bolton News, The Wellsprings, Victoria Square, Bolton BL1 1AR.

Applications must arrive by 5pm on Friday, October 16, 2015.
