BOLTON'S MPs have met with the independent panel responsible for deciding the future of the borough's maternity and children's supercentre.
The Royal Bolton Hospital was chosen as a site for one of three regional children's centres in December, but the decision was referred to a review panel after a campaign led by MPs in Salford, Bury, Rochdale and Trafford, where maternity wards will be closed.
David Crausby and Ruth Kelly were among 21 MPs, who represent constituencies in the areas affected, to meet with the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP).
The IRP will make the final decision on whether Bolton becomes one of three centres of excellence in the region.
David Crausby, MP for Bolton North-east, said: "I made sure I put the case for Bolton forward. If the original decision is overturned then it will be a disgrace."
Dr Iddon, MP for Bolton South-east said: "There will obviously be tension between ourselves and Salford MPs, but we feel the option that makes Bolton a supercentre is the best option."
Ruth Kelly, MP for Bolton West, was unable to attend the meeting, but said: "I've always supported Royal Bolton Hospital's campaign for the development of the neonatal unit.
"I will be meeting with the IRP in the near future to ensure the Bolton case is fully heard."
The meeting took place at the House of Commons last night.
The IRP, which is made up of a team of experts from outside the North-west, is considering whether the correct decision was made to open the supercentre's at The Royal Bolton, St Mary's in central Manchester and the Royal Oldham Hospital were chosen to host the centres of excellence.
