A teenager was last night charged with the murder of a 12-year-old girl who was shot dead in her own home.

The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with the murder of Kamilah Peniston, who was gunned down in her home in Wembley Road, Gorton, Manchester, at about 7.30pm on Monday.

The youngster was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

She was later transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital where she died at about 9am on Tuesday.

The studious girl, described by neighbours as a "little brainbox", died with her family at her hospital bedside.

A police spokesman said: "A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder, possession of a Section 1 firearm and possession of Section 1 ammunition following an incident in Gorton on Monday."

The teenager is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court today.
