MOST people believe the increasing amount of traffic on our roads to be a major problem.
Despite this, we continue to use our own vehicles to travel short distances to work or into town because we deem the public transport system to be woefully inadequate.
If the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive is successful in its bid to win £2.9 billion of Government money, the situation could well change.
Obviously most of this cash would be spent outside Bolton, but hopefully the town would benefit from the planned fleet of 500 new buses, bigger and better trains and school buses which would pick up children from outside their homes.
Undoubtedly, improvements to our under-resourced and over-priced public transport system are the only way in which people will be persuaded to leave their cars at home and hop on a bus or train. Let us hope the bid for money is successful.
