A WORKSHOP launched to discuss this year's smoking ban has been hailed a massive success.

Council and health bosses have organised a series of sessions for Bolton businesses in the run up to July 1, when the ban on smoking in enclosed public places and workplaces in England begins.

Almost 100 local companies attended the first information day, which fully explained the legislation.

Local business owners who have already banned smoking were invited to discuss their experiences.

Linda Duckworth, group manager for the council's food health and safety team, said: "There was standing room only during the first session and we've had some really positive feedback.

"This ban applies to everyone and people have to be prepared so we want to give them as much help as we can."

Four further sessions, which last for a morning or an afternoon, are planned before the ban is implemented.

As well as local companies, voluntary groups are also being targeted as the legislation will also apply to them.

In Bolton, 29.6 per cent of people smoke compared with a national average of 27 per cent.

The Bolton News launched a Stub It Out campaign, calling for smoking to be banned in enclosed public places, when these figures were revealed and in February last year, MPs voted with a massive majority for the ban.

The legislation includes pubs, clubs and private members bars. Anyone caught flouting the ban will face a £50 on-the-spot fine.
