ORGANISERS of a day of charity races are calling on people across Bolton to help break last year's record number of entries.

The people behind the Horwich Carnival Races need to attract more than 750 runners and 260 cyclists if they are to set an all-time high for the number of participants.

This year Bolton Hospice will benefit from the money raised and organisers are urging people to come forward and help support the worthy cause.

The race day, on Sunday, June 24, includes The British Masters 5K Road Running Championships, The National Tricycle Championship Race and a National Ladies' Championship Cycle Race.

The National Race Walking Championship will also be held at the event.

Gareth Hughes, one of the organisers, said: "This is a huge event and it has really helped put Horwich on the map.

"It attracts top athletes from all over the country which is great, but we want people in Bolton to get involved.

"Whether you're a walker, jogger, fun runner, novice runner or more serious athlete, Horwich Carnival Races has something for everyone."

Participants have to pay an entrance fee for each race and £1 from each fee will be donated to Bolton Hospice. Competitors are asked to try and raise more through donations and sponsorship.

The event costs around £23,000 every year to stage with the funds usually coming from council grants, sponsorship, fundraising activities and personal donations.

It suffered a set back this year when Bolton Council increased the prices for road closures and their biggest sponsor, Asda, pulled out.

They are now looking for another sponsor.
