MP IVAN Lewis has admitted being "concerned" about the problems uncovered in a BBC documentary looking into maternity care in Manchester.

The health minister and Bury South MP, who has Government responsibility for maternity care was speaking before tonight's Panorama, featuring St Mary's Hospital in Manchester and Barnet Hospital in North London programme was aired.

He said: "The UK remains one of the safest countries in the world in which to have a baby and maternity services are the safest that they have ever been.

"Nevertheless, it is essential to continue to drive forward improvements to services, as we seek to reduce avoidable errors.

"Naturally I am concerned about the problems uncovered by Panorama and expect the relevant Trusts to address these issues effectively."

Undercover reporter, Hayley Cutts, spent time working as a volunteer at both hospitals and the programme highlighted overcrowding, a lack of staff and even a new mum being left without a bed.
