YOUNGSTERS in Bolton are taking to the greens to enjoy a "class" in the fresh air in the latest initiative to help them learn.

Forget whiteboards and desks - an alternative way to learn literacy, numeracy and IT skills is with the help of that North-west past-time . . . crown green bowling.

The nine-to-11-year-olds from Holy Infant and St Anthony RC Primary School in Astley Bridge, are among hundreds of local schoolchildren taking six-week courses in the sport at Leverhulme Park bowling club. Better self-esteem, team building and confidence all result from the sport.

"The idea is to aid learning in situations away from the classroom," explained Janet Rhodes, centre manager of the Playing For Success scheme, locally established by the Department for Education and Science 10 years ago.

The Crown Green Zone complements that other successful initiative, Study@bwfc, based at the Reebok since 1999, helping children improve achievements in core subjects.

Currently, there are 60 youngsters spending time on the greens, aided by veteran coaches like 80-year-old club chairman George Haworth, and lady president Hilda Jones.

They help coach the children in the sport in 45-minute sessions before time with computers and books in the Zone's room in the sports centre.

The sessions are proving popular since they were set up at the end of last year, and are booked up until the end of the year.

Eliza Kettle, aged 10 said: "It's really good. You have to be determined to line up your bowl with the jack, and you have to concentrate to get it near."

Eliza has now decided to be "a professional" at the sport. And 10-year-old Ellen Castley believes it is "as good as netball".

The only problem for organisers is a lack of coaches for the growing number of children who want to learn.

"We would love to hear from more local people with even an hour or two to offer each week," added Janet. "They don't have to be experienced bowlers, just keen to help these youngsters enjoy the game."
