AS the town marks Bolton Wanderers' darkest day, we remember the 33 supporters killed in the Burnden Disaster.

The football fans were among an estimated 85,000 people at the FA Cup sixth-round match between Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City, on March 9, 1946.

Thirty one men, one woman and one child died in the crush, doing nothing more than attending a football match. Hundreds more were injured.

The disaster brought about the Moelwyn Hughes report, which recommended more rigorous control of crowd sizes.

People observed a two-minute silence in Victoria Square in Bolton town centre at 11am today, with the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Carole Swarbrick in attendance.
