CHILDREN made the most of the shortlived sunshine by tucking into ice-creams — for a good cause.

Young fundraisers at Haslam Park Primary School in Deane decided to combine their two favourite things — sunshine and ice-cream — to support in aid of a The Willows Centre.

The ice-cream was donated by Holden's Ice Cream in Edgworth and Tesco in Horwich.

Children bought the treats for a £1 raising £265 for the nearby centre which provides activities for young people from 4pm, including on Wednesdays drama classes by the Octagon Theatre.

The centre is run by volunteers.

The staff helped by year six children served up the ice-creams in the afternoon.

Amy Newton, reception teacher, organised the fundraiser after learning about the centre from parents who volunteer there.

She said: "The school organises fundraising activities and I told the parents we would do one for the centre as it is close to where some of the children who come to the school live.

"I thought we always do cake sales and decided to do an ice-cream sale instead. All the ice-cream was donated.

"It was very popular. The children and the staff all enjoyed an ice-cream and the weather was lovely."

Some children were so excited that they dropped their ice-creams — but there was no need to cry over spilt dairy as they were given a replacement

The Willows Community Centre is run by volunteers in the local community.

Young people can take part in a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, games, a large pool table and much more.
