THE remains of the former Farnworth Market are set to be demolished.

Bolton Council has applied for permission from its planning department to demolish the two canopies in the market precinct off King Street.

The site is being cleared in preparations for the redevelopment of the market place by St Modwen.

Three canopies originally occupied the site but the first one was demolished back in November 2013, with trade continuing on the site for three days a week.

Farnworth Market eventually closed for good at the end of February after negotiations to find a new location for traders in the town fell through due to lack of interest.

Plans for the demolition include setting up a perimeter fence around the site, mechanically dismantling the canopies using a 20 tonne excavator with shear attachment, and retaining the existing flagged area and making the surfaces good.
