A CASE of mistaken identity has led to a man with the same name as Olympian Jason Kenny receiving more than 50 tweets a day from fans.

Father-of-one Jason Kenny said he has been getting messages on Twitter and Instagram congratulating him on his Rio Olympics success.

The Peugeot car sales manager, who like his namesake is originally from Farnworth, said it is an “absolute pleasure” to get the cyclist's tweets.

Mr Kenny, who lives in Adlington, said: “It has happened for years and first started when he was at the Beijing games, then obviously London and now Rio.

“I usually just re-tweet them or sometimes I reply and say thank you but I am not in Rio.

“I find it funny.”

To attempt to differentiate from gold medallist Jason Kenny, Mr Kenny has written on his biography on Twitter, "Bolton lad but not an Olympian, that's @jasonkenny107 who's amazing + not Canadian that's @jkenney who's...Canadian. Often confused for both you ain't the first."

Mr Kenny, who is a keen cyclist himself and has ridden at the Manchester Velodrome, is general manager for Perrys Motor Sales Ltd, in Bridgeman Street — a garage close to the Jason Kenny Centre in Bolton One leisure complex.

The 46-year-old added: “We had an open day at the car garage and we put on the invites that Jason Kenny would be on site to meet people.

“People were turning up asking could they meet Jason Kenny so they were a bit disappointed when I stepped out, they must have thought that I had really let myself go since the Olympics.”

Mr Kenny, who has been watching the games, said of his namesake: “He is doing fantastically.

“If he does not become Sir Jason Kenny, then there is something wrong.”

Mr Kenny has woken up to a flood of congratulatory tweets this morning after cyclist Kenny's victory in Rio last night.

Kenny kept his cool to win a stunning sixth gold and his peerless fiancee Laura Trott won her fourth as Great Britain dominated the Olympic Velodrome for a third successive Games.

Kenny's third and Trott's second gold of the Rio Olympics saw Britain finish with six gold medals from nine events entered on the track.
