THE opening of a newly refurbished leisure centre went with a splash.

Paralympian silver medallist Jonathan Fox teamed up with Coronation Street star Tisha Merry to officially declare The Health Hub at Sharples — previously the former Sharples Leisure Centre — open.

The centre in Hill Cot Road reopened after closing on July 31 for £400,000 refurbishment work.

At the official opening, members of the local community turned up to have a look around the centre and meet the stars. Jonathan, a swimmer, and Tisha, who plays Steph Britton, spoke to visitors and signed autographs and took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Jenny Gawne, PE teacher at Sharples High School, said: “The opening went really well and the feedback we got was brilliant. We had different classes on.

“Many signed up for membership and we took bookings on the day.”

On show were the revamp facilities including a full size basketball court.

Visitors enjoyed demonstrations from Bolton Metro swimming club and Bolton Artistic Roller Skating.

They had a chance to play badminton or table tennis, take part in a public swim and try out the fitness suite.

They were also able to ease their tired muscles by taking part in a free sports massage taster sessions and personal health checks.

Miss Gawne added: “It was nice to see some of our ex-pupils at the opening. This centre is for the community.

“For those who were not able to make the opening they can pop in during its opening hours.”

As well as grass football pitches and a multi-use games area pitch and all weather pitch hire.

All of the work was carried out over the summer break. the centre underwent refurbishment and maintenance work.

Primary schools have returned to hold their swimming lessons there.

The leisure centre is based next to Sharples School and is open to the public on Monday to Friday 5.30pm to 10pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 1pm.
