THE art of quilting is enjoying a renaissance in Bolton— and is far removed from the make-do-and-mend era when fabric was recycled and patchworked together create a blanket.

The traditional skill is being brought into the modern day with Breightmet being home to a long arm quilting machine.

And once a month members can be found at Breightmet Long Arm Quilting Studio creating handmade quilts, place mats, pin cushions, bags and much more.

It is one of a number of quilting clubs which have sprung up throughout the country.

The club was set up by Bolton at Home and is for people to share contemporary and traditional techniques and exploring the "endless possibilities" of long arm quilting — which can be used for embroidery, cushions, clothing and of course quilts.

Jennifer Gilmour, project leader and community artist said: "I am interested in quilting and we received some funding so we were able to buy a long arm quilting machine as we could not find one to rent.

"It is one of the enterprise projects run for the community.

"We usually have around six to eight people come to the sessions once a month and they are really enjoying it.

"It has a great social benefit and we would like to put on an evening class.

"The club is still in its early stages and those who come are working towards using the machine.

She added: "They are making tote bags and items for their home and some are making quilts which is really good.

"They are sharing their techniques with each other and developing skills.

"I have been blown away by the quality of the items, they could be sold on a craft stall."

The quilt club is open to beginners and experienced quilters and people can choose patterns and projects at the club or bring their own and supplies are provided.

Members include Evelyn Franklin, aged 75, who lives in Breightmet, said: "It is really nice friendly group.

"I like the social aspect of it and have made small bags, pin cushion and other things for charity stalls. I've also made table runners and I'm enjoying the patchwork, I like doing jigsaws so really like doing patchwork.

"I had done a little bit in the past, and we are lucky to have a long arm quilting machine because they are so expensive.

"I really enjoy it, it is a really good hobby."

The group meets the first Friday of every month 1:30pm to 3:30pm. The cost is £3.50 or £2.50 for Bolton at Home Tenant.

It meets at Elderdale Community Centre, just off of Yewdale Gardens in Breightmet.
