PROPOSED changes to a former police station have been met with disappointment from town politicians who want to “preserve” the historic building.

Plans to alter the roof and windows on the front and rear elevations of the former Horwich Police Station in Church Street, Horwich, now known as Intermart House, were recommended for refusal by Horwich Town Council’s planning committee.

During the committee meeting. on Thursday, councillors discussed the scheme, which follows planning approval for conversion of the building’s loft space of the building, now known as Intermart House, to offices.

Councillor Chris Root said: “I would like to save the facade. I think this application will change the facade of the building, which I personally think should be listed, but isn’t.”

Councillor Stephen Chadwick said: “It’s one of Horwich’s iconic buildings and I don’t think the proposals should be accepted as they are.

“It should be listed — or become an Asset of Community Value.”

Councillor Stephen Rock said: “We need to preserve it.”

Bolton Council will determine the application under delegated powers in due course.

In a planning statement, the applicant said: “We have amended the glazed area to the front elevation in line with the planner’s previous comments.

“It is considered that the proposed development would not harm the character and appearance of the building or Wallsuches Conservation Area, and would not unduly harm the amenity of neighbouring residents and uses.”
