THE creation of a shop and flats in an outbuilding behind a supermarket that occupies a former pub has been given the backing by town councillors.

Plans to convert and change the use of the outbuilding besides Nisa in Chorley New Road, Horwich, and add extensions for two one-bed flats and a retail area were considered by Horwich Town Council’s planning committee.

Councillor Chris Root said: “It is an empty space. We know it’s a thriving business and I think we should support them in their continued investment in this area.”

Cllr Jim Bullock said: “I’m concerned about the provision for parking but some development would be useful there.”

But Cllr Stephen Rock said: “It’s an old building and I’m not happy about it at all.”

The committee voted by a majority to approve the plan. Bolton Council’s highways department has objected and the council will decide the matter in due course.

A previous application to turn the outbuilding into storage and a hot food and takeaway premises – when there was interest from pizza chain Domino’s – was refused.

The applicant says In the planning the statement, the applicant’s planning consultant states: “The building is somewhat dilapidated and in need of refurbishment and investment.

“The building is not practical or attractive enough to be used without a shop frontage extension.the proposal will improve the appearance of the area."
