A TEENAGER is to stand trial with two others accused of racially abusing a US army veteran on a Manchester tram.
Former soldier Juan Jasso Jr, who is now a sport lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, confronted three people about their allegedly abusive language aboard a Metrolink tram travelling between Shudehill and Market Street stops on June 28.
Aaron Cauchi, aged 19, of Spa Crescent, Little Hulton, appeared alongside co-defendants at Salford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Cauchi faces two counts of using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour and one count of common assault.
Co-defendant Robert Molloy, aged 20, of no fixed address faces one count of racially aggravated assault, two counts of common assault and one count of using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour.
A 16-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons faces two counts of using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour, and one of common assault.
Cauchi, Molloy, of no fixed address, and the 16-year-old, from Salford, were all bailed on the condition they refrain from contacting one another or the alleged victims and do not ride Metrolink trams.
None of the three entered pleas, they were bailed and the magistrates agreed for a further case management hearing to take place on January 4. The expected two day summary trial will begin at the same court on February 6.
