BOLTON Council had to explain in July why former chief executive Paul Najsarek - who quit his £160,000-a-year job after just five months - left with a settlement of £90,000.

He received £55,192 as a one-off severance payment and a payment in lieu of notice amounting to £34,808, for an 11-week notice period that he did not work.

Thousands turned out to support the eighth Iron Man event.

The 1,800 athletes, 133 of whom were Boltonians, took on the gruelling challenge made up of a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile-bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon run.

The race began at Pennington Flash Country Park, through Horwich and the Macron Stadium and along to the finish line in Le Mans Crescent.
