A YOUNG drummer is becoming a big noise in the world of rock.

Cameron Tate, aged eight, is being considered for a role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical, School of Rock — after he decided at the last minute he would attend open auditions.

He wowed the casting crew at The Lowry, who put him through to the second audition in London, where he was one of just 10 out of more than 200, to be shortlisted.

The youngster, who attends St Peter's CE Primary School in Smithills, picked up a pair of sticks at the age of three after telling his parents he wanted to play drums.

And now he took part in the auditions for the West End Show, where he performed with other hopefuls.

Cameron, who hit the headlines after passing his grade five drumming exam last summer, said: "I was nervous with everyone looking at me.

"I would really like to get the part because of the acting, I would like to that. I have never done it professionally but I have performed in plays. But drumming is my favourite."

His music teacher and parents are incredibly proud of Cameron.

Dad Pete said: "Cameron was asked if he wanted to go to the auditions and he ummed and ahhed about it until Sunday, the day of the auditions, when he said he wanted to go.

"He has never done anything like this. The casting director said he was a superstar.

"We have been filling out forms and we are asked what stage school he goes to. He's never been to a stage school, but he has been taught by Booths, so we put that down.

"Cameron has been amazing, so cool about it.

"He's just enjoying it, and we are proud of him, supporting him and guiding him in what he wants to do."

His music teacher Alex Langford-Taylor at Booths Music in Churchgate, added: "Cameron is very gifted and I knew he would do well and there would be more when he was walked out.

"I am really pleased he is getting experience like this and I'm really proud of him.

"He enjoys what he does."

Cameron is now waiting to find out if he makes the final cut.
