A DEFENCELESS 91-year-old man was grabbed by violent thugs who smashed their way into his home.

The frail pensioner was relaxing in his semi-detached Chorley Old Road house when the terrifying raid took place at about 6.30pm last Thursday.

Just days later, another shocking robbery was committed when an 84-year-old widower was robbed while out walking.

His 1950s Rolex Oyster watch, which he was given as a wedding present by his wife, was taken.

Police are investigating both incidents.

In the Doffcocker burglary, three men cut through a wooded area to creep into the back garden of the property and reportedly climbed on a kitchen extension before climbing in a bathroom window.

The pensioner was watching television when one of the intruders manhandled him and forced him on the floor while the accomplices stole cash and a mobile phone.

One neighbour said: “I heard they wrenched his arm behind his back and then pinned him to the floor.

“He was unhurt but was left shocked. Neighbours went to help him.”

The burglary victim is a former owner of an off-licence where Top O’th Brew Convenience Store now stands just yards from his property.

Residents were stunned at the cowardice of the burglars to pick on the 91-year-old.

Detectives want the public’s help to catch the heartless robbers, who were all white and wearing dark clothing.

One was in his 30s and large and the remaining two in their 20s and slim.

Detective Sergeant Alison Byrne of Bolton borough said: “These men cruelly targeted a defenceless man in his own home; somewhere he should feel safe, all for some cash and a mobile phone.

“Fortunately, the man wasn’t hurt, but the fear will stay with him.

“If you saw anything, or remember seeing three men in the area acting suspiciously beforehand, then please get in touch.”

Widower Mr Pearce has two sons, one of whom died a few years ago, and a daughter in Australia.

A Chorley Old Road resident said: “He is a very private man and was very well respected.

“Everyone knows him as Mr Pearce. He is a proud man.”
