THE latest exercise trend is proving to be a huge hit with mums — and their babies.

Together they work it out at the Fit Mamas Class held every week at Bolton St Catherine’s Academy in Harwood.

The popular class was set up by qualified fitness instructor Vikki Owen after her daughter Amelie was born and she realised it was a lot more difficult for mums to exercise as many places no longer offered crèche facilities — as was the case when her first child was born 20 years ago.

Mrs Owen said that the classes were more than just being a workout sessions.

She said: “The classes are good for children’s social development because they meet other children and for the mums it is a social occasion for them.

“Many mums can feel isolated after having a baby and here they get to meet other mums and know they are feeling the same.

“Many of the members are now best friends and are arranging nights out together!

She added: “I have seen mums drop of their children in the school and come into the class.”

During the class the children are able to play together in the gym while their mums work out and some little ones even join their mothers to provide that extra bit of encouragement — and laughs.

Mrs Owen said: “Children are following their mums’ example and are being introduced to fitness at a young age.

“The classes are held in the dance floor and the school is supportive because it is a service for the community.”

She added: “I have seen mums drop their children at the school and then come to the school.”

Mrs Owen, who lives in Bury, is now looking for other venues to expand the classes to other areas.

Mrs Owen said: “I am able to keep prices low and affordable, but if the venue is expensive it will mean I will have to raise the prices, which I don’t want to do.”
