THE votes are in and according to Bolton's pub goers, House Without A Name is the place to enjoy a tipple.

We ran a survey on The Bolton News website to find the best pub in town for the Bolton News Food & Drink Award 2017.

The winner was The House Without A Name, winning a third of votes cast. It will receive a certificate and bragging rights to known as Best Pub in Bolton.

House Without A Name in Lea Gate is set in the middle of a row of small cottages in Harwood.

The story goes when the first publican went to apply for his licence he was asked: "What is the name of the house?"

"It has no name", was the reply and so the pub has been known The House Without A Name or the No Name as the locals call it, for more than a hundred years. Originally built as two cottages they were joined together in approximately 1832.

Jon-Paul Nolan, who manages the family business which involves his father-in-law Brian Grundy, said: "It's brilliant to have been voted the best pub in Bolton, we are over the moon.

"We have been here five years last week. We have won awards from CAMRA but this was voted by the wider community."

He added: "We have a range of cask ales and the quality is good."

Mr Nolan, aged 35, said that the pub always keeps up with punters changing drinking habits, for example the popularity for gin is reflected in the drinks on offer.

He said: "The pub is really cosy with a good atmosphere, whether there are six people or 60 people.

"We have people of all ages and all backgrounds, and from all over."

The shortlisted pubs were The Crofters, Bradshaw; Bob's Smithy Inn, White Horse, Edgworth, Black Horse, Bury Road.

Alan Calvert, aged 72, who visits the pub said: "It is a very friendly pub.

"You go there sit down with a group and chat with, it is what a pub should be and a lot of people go there."

The pub continues its tradition of at least 25-years of the Trafalgar Day Society celebrating Admiral Nelson’s 1805 victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets.
