A PROPERTY company boss has called on Bolton Council to carry out regular litter patrols on one of the borough’s major routes.

Jason Parkin, from Adlington, has written to town hall chiefs about an ‘ongoing problem’ with fly tipping along the Blackrod Bypass.

Mr Parkin, a director at CUBED Property Advisers, highlighted the layby opposite the Cherry Tree restaurant as a particular blackspot for waste and litter, due to its use an overnight stop by truck drivers.

The 47-year-old told The Bolton News that ‘all sorts’ of waste is left in the layby by HGV drivers, including human faeces.

But the father-of-two, who was born in Bolton and lived in Westhoughton and Over Hulton has been unimpressed with the response he has received from the authority.

He said: “We have pressed Bolton Council on numerous occasions to offer some support with cleaning it up and getting on top of the problem with very, very little in the way of co-operation.

They don’t want to put bins or signs up.”

The father-of-two was part of a community clean-up effort along the route, but says the area needs regular monitoring.

He said: "We collect a huge amount of rubbish and almost immediately after we’ve cleaned it, it’s started again.

“It’s a real issue, that layby, one of the worst spots. I drive along that road back towards Bolton, the hedges and laybys are a disgrace. It’s a dumping ground, if you just take a look, it’s unbelievable.”

“Since we cleaned it up there’s been more fly tipping. For me prevention is better than having to keep cleaning up, something needs to be done about policing it.

“I believe people should be policing truck stops. Drivers should not be sleeping overnight and stopping and when they leave scattering everything.”

Mr Parkin said his business and his family had both left Bolton due to the area ‘unfortunately going downhill’.

He said: “I now live in Adlington. There’s a huge difference between the way Chorley Council responds to litter and fly tipping.

“Chorley is a hell of a lot cleaner than Bolton, we moved out of Bolton because unfortunately it’s gong quite downhill recently and fly tipping is a massive problem.

He continued: “It’s a standing joke Love Bolton Hate Litter, it should be the other way around, so many people have said that to me.

“Bolton has a real problem if you compare it to other surrounding towns you will be surprised. Oldham is pretty dirty but Bolton is getting that way.”

A spokesperson from Bolton Council said fly tipping “Flytipping is disgusting and irresponsible and we are determined to tackle it.”

The spokesman also said the rubbish was removed as soon as possible after a report had been received and the council was looking into the possibility of providing bins at the layby near The Cherry Tree.
